Mpumalanga - An elderly farmer from Mpumalanga is recovering in hospital after he was attacked and shot three times on his farm near Standerton, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Jan Smith, 72, and his wife Marieta, 68, were overpowered by armed men on Monday who forced them to open their safe, took two weapons, then shot Smith in his chest, thigh and arm.

According to the couple's son, Hardus Smith, his mother was punched several times. The gun with which Jan Smith was shot did not belong to him, Beeld reported.

The robbers took the couple's car keys and left in their Toyota Rav.

Smith was taken to the Parkland Clinic in Springs, where he was stabilised, and, according to his son, he would undergo surgery on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Amos Vilakazi and said police were investigating cases of attempted murder and robbery. - Sapa
