Johannesburg - A 69-year-old farmer and his son, aged 33, were expected to appear in court on Wednesday after a farmworker died and another was assaulted at their farm in Boshoek, near Morokweng.

Police said that on Monday, two farmworkers were accused of theft, which they denied. But the farmer and his son allegedly tied their hands with chains, assaulted them and gave them electric shocks with car jump-leads.

One of the farmworkers died on the scene and another farmworker, aged 20, was badly assaulted.

Police spokesman Brigadier ST Ngubane said the workers were taken to a clinic and “the suspects alleged that the deceased fainted after drinking too much alcohol at the weekend”. When police were called, the second victim told the police that the deceased was electrocuted.
