Durban - An apparent lovers’ quarrel ended with a man critically injuring his girlfriend before shooting himself dead in oThongathi on Thursday.

The couple both had bullet wounds to the head.

Police spokeswoman, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said the incident happened at a Noordberg Road home in Ntombisa, at about 10.30am.

“The suspect, believed to be in his thirties, shot his girlfriend, and turned the gun on himself. The injured victim was taken to hospital,” Gwala said.

Umhlali police were investigating and an inquest docket had been opened.

Private security company, Reaction Unit South Africa, said it appeared a dispute had ensued, during which the man shot his 37-year-old girlfriend and then himself.

“Paramedics from several ambulance services responded to the scene and upon arrival, found the African male showed no signs of life and was declared dead on scene. His girlfriend was shot above the eye,” Reaction Unit South Africa said on its Facebook page.

A firearm believed to have belonged to the deceased was found lying next to his body outside the home, the security company said.

“It is alleged that the couple were involved in a domestic dispute when the boyfriend drew a firearm. As the female fled from the house and down the dirt road, her boyfriend fired several shots at her and one bullet struck her above her right eye,” the unit said.

Netcare 911 said the man suffered multiple bullet wounds.
