Pietermaritzburg - Four of the 11 students that were arrested following protests that wrecked the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus were granted bail in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday.

Bail for the four was set at R1 000, while the other seven were denied bail.

The case against the 11, who face charges of public violence, interference with police operations and failure to adhere to a court order, will be back in court on December 2.

The 11 were arrested following protests at the university’s Pietermaritzburg campus on September 22 where the students clashed with police during protests to demand a zero fee increase. Cars were stoned and fires set alight in the university’s Malherbe residence. Police used rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
