Johannesburg - A fifth body has been recovered in Soweto where a building collapsed last month, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

“The body was found last night (Friday) by security guards who were patrolling the premises,” said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

“The body has not yet been identified.”

The building, an old power station behind the landmark Orlando towers, collapsed at the end of June.

Officials found out about the collapse when paramedics received a call from an injured man who claimed to have been part of a group allegedly trying to steal cables and metal from the building.

A search began and three bodies were initially found.

On July 1, another body was found, and the search was later called off.

Makhubela said five others were injured in the incident.
