A group of armed men robbed a mall in Fourways, Johannesburg, stealing an undisclosed amount of money, and cellphones and wallets from customers, SABC radio reported.
Police have recovered 15 stolen firearms and ammunition in Pretoria and Cape Town in the past few days, national spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao said on Tuesday.
Eleven “dangerous” criminals were arrested in the process, said Adriao.
On Wednesday last week, members of the national intervention unit pounced on four men at a filling station in Atteridgeville believed to be on their way to a robbery.
Four guns and ammunition were found in their possession, said Adriao.
The men appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court the following day and their case was postponed to a later date to establish if they are linked to other armed robberies in Gauteng.
In another case, police found a rifle hidden in bushes near the Heideveld railway station in Cape Town last Wednesday.
It was established that the rifle had been registered as stolen in Stellenbosch in December 2010, said Adriao.
Another 10 firearms were recovered after they were stolen from their owner in Saldana Bay in Cape Town on January 30.
Adriao said a total of 11 stolen guns were found during a search at various houses in Vredenburg.
The man's 28-year-old son and six other people were arrested, he said. - Sapa
