Five people have been arrested in Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp for traffic fraud and corruption, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Bongelethu, Oudtshoorn, at 11am on Saturday morning for corruption, said Captain Bernadine Steyn.

He was an employee at a driving school in the town.

On Friday morning, three men and a woman were arrested at three premises in Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp, she said.

“The operation is a result of an intensive investigation done over a period of time and executed by (the SA Police Service) in conjunction with the departments of transport and public works.”

Two of the men, aged 29 and 30, were arrested at the traffic department in Calitzdorp for fraud and corruption.

The 39-year-old woman was arrested at the Oudtshoorn traffic department for fraud.

“It is alleged that the suspects issued fraudulent learner licences to applicants over a period of time,” Steyn said.

A 32-year-old man was arrested at an Oudtshoorn driving school for corruption.

“It is alleged that the suspect received cash to bribe a traffic officer to issue a learner licence,” she said.

The five would appear in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
