Five brothers were each jailed for life by the Dukuza High Court, in Bergville, on Wednesday for killing their uncle, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Mbukeleni Slingene Hlela, 37, Mthintwa Vincent Hlela, 29, Phumlani Elias Hlela, 23, Zimele Hlela, 28, and Hlalakushiwo Mavuka Hlela, 28, appeared in court for murder, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Hlanekela Thomas Hlela, 39, was travelling from Pomeroy to Gauteng in a taxi when his nephews followed him in a white Toyota Corolla on September 3 last year.

When the taxi driver stopped at a shop in Pomeroy, the men stopped next to the taxi and opened fire. Hlanekela was shot several times and died on the scene.

They had accused him of killing their father Mbangiswa Hlela, 53, in Gauteng. – Sapa
