Five escape from North West police cells

Rustenburg – Five awaiting trial prisoners have escaped from the Hartbeespoort Dam police holding cells near Brits, North West police said on Monday.

Spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said the prisoners escaped on Saturday night.

He named the escapees as Nicholas Masipa, 27, from Zimbabwe, who had been arrested for robbery he allegedly committed in November 2012. Phillip Masingili, 33, also known as “Louis Fabian” from Mozambique. He was arrested for house breaking and theft he allegedly committed in 2012. Samuel Mariti, 27, a South African who was arrested for house breaking he allegedly committed in 2014. Asley Mayepi, 27, from Malawi. He was arrested for robbery he allegedly committed this year, and Anthony Chauke, 32, from Mozambique who was arrested for stock theft he allegedly committed this year.

Circumstances surrounding their escape was not clear as there were no signs of a forceful exit.

“We are currently investigating this matter internally and if there is any one who is found to be wrong, the person will be dealt with accordingly,” said the acting provincial commissioner of the North West Major General Jacob Tsumane.

“We are appealing to those who have any information about the whereabouts of the escapees to alert Hartbeespoort Dam police Major Hezekiel Dikgang on 082 492 3994.”
