Police have arrested five men allegedly involved in the killing of three people at KwaMashu Men’s Hostel on Friday.
Colonel Jay Naicker said on Sunday that the Inanda cluster task team and KwaMashu police had made a “speedy” breakthrough.
A gang stormed into the hostel and started shooting on Friday.
Bongani Ngubane, 38, Hloniphani Ngubane, 33, and Peaceful Sithole, 35, were shot and later pronounced dead at the scene.
A fourth person was shot in the hand and he was in a stable condition at a local hospital, said Naicker.
The task team followed up leads in the case and arrested five men early on Saturday.
“They were arrested near the Thembalihle Railway Station in KwaMashu.
“Police recovered four firearms with their serial numbers filed off, which are presumed to be the murder weapons,” said Naicker.
He said the two pistols and two revolvers would be sent for tests.
“The five suspects will be charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms. They will appear in the Ntuzuma court soon,” he said, adding that more arrests were possible.
Ward councillor Themba Xulu said he heard the gunshots on Friday and immediately contacted the police.
Xulu said he was concerned that six people had been killed at the hostel this month.
On Sunday, Xulu addressed hostel residents, asking them to call the police if they suspected their neighbours of foul play.
He commended the police for the swift arrests. -The Mercury
