Brits - Five men arrested in connection with violent protests in Majakaneng near Brits appeared in court on Wednesday, North West police said.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said Lazarus Mathe, 24, who faced a charge of public violence, was released on warning. He would appear again in court on May 13.

The four others, Pogisho Sediro, 24, Abram Rakomane, 26, Reuben Ramatshane, 28, and Vincent Soko, 23, were granted R1000 bail each.

Their case was postponed to May 15. They all appeared in the Brits Magistrate's Court.

The five were arrested on Tuesday following a violent protest in February. Residents of the village barricaded Old Pretoria Road and the N4 highway.

They were demanding water, proper roads, and RDP houses.

A cement truck, a house belonging to a councillor, and several cars were burnt. Shops were also looted during the protest.
