Cape Town - Fondly described by some as a “quintessential flower child” and an “accomplished” puppeteer, clown and stilt-walker, Rosemary “Rosie” Theron had plans to abandon her career in the entertainment industry and move to the Eastern Cape with her youngest daughter Charial, in search of a change.
“Rosie planned to take Charial and go to the Transkei to look after horses. She wanted to change her life,” said close family friend Richard Kraak.
The young girl had been home-schooled by Theron, but after her mother went missing Charial started attending Star of the Sea Convent Primary School, a Catholic school in St James.
Of Phoenix Racing Cloud, known fondly as Racy, Kraak said she was a “lovely” child.
Explaining her unusual name, he said it was Native American and derived from the custom of choosing a name only after identifying any significant features of the elements of nature, animals or character at the time of birth.
“Racy was born in the Scarborough area, and when she was born her mother went outside, looked up at the sky and saw these racing clouds,” he said.
Lauren Amy Hofmeyr, who worked with Theron at performance art company Sonic Weaver Productions, described her former colleague as a “very special” person who loved her children and bringing laughter into the world.
“Some people just think we’re freaks, but being a clown is a sacred calling, trying to show the world that you can step out of your box and enjoy laughter.”
Kraak said Theron’s wish was to be buried in a biodegradable urn concealing an avocado pip. This would be “planted” in an area “where its fruits will feed people in need”.
Although no funeral plans have yet been announced, Kraak said friends and family were planning a memorial expected to take place next Friday.
Theron also leaves a son, Wahiri Taki Schulz, 14, who lives with his father Toto Schulz in Santiago, Chile. Posted on his Facebook page, Schulz wrote: “Miss you mom, I’ll always remember you.”
She also leaves her mother Denise and two siblings, her brother Stephen and sister Angelique.
