Beaufort West - Two people appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with possession of around R628 000 worth of perlemoen, Western Cape police said.

The case against the 44-year-old Chinese man and a 24-year-old Malawian man was postponed to August 11 to allow the court time to obtain interpreters, said Captain Malcolm Pojie.

The men were arrested early Friday morning when the Central Karoo K9 (dog) unit stopped the BMW X5 which the pair were travelling in, on the N1 near the entrance of the Karoo National Park.

“They discovered 32 bags filled with a total of 1257 abalone (perlemoen) with an estimated value of R628 000... concealed in the boot of the vehicle,” Pojie said.

The men were arrested and their vehicle confiscated.

It was believed that the perlemoen haul was destined for Johannesburg.
