Two foreigners were arrested for being in possession of stolen goods worth about R300 000 at the Port Elizabeth Airport, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

A 27-year-old Ghanaian man and a woman, 32, were held shortly after airport officials detected a large consignment of electronics in their bags on Tuesday, said Captain Mali Govender.

“Baggage handlers told police they detected suspicious items in several bags, which were passing through their scanners,” said Govender.

It later emerged that seven out of 10 bags belonging to the Ghanaians were packed with electronic equipment.

The equipment included 32 laptops, 11 cellphones, cameras, a video camera, a DVD player and hard drives.

Govender said investigations linked some of the laptops to other cases reported in Grahamstown.

“We are working closely with the officers from Port Elizabeth in our investigations,” she said.

The pair were expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Thursday. – Sapa
