Johannesburg - Former Blue Bulls rugby player Paul Jacobus Botes was arrested and has appeared in court for fraud, the Hawks said on Friday.
“He was arrested at his home in Pretoria on 20 counts of fraud, amounting to R20 million,” said Captain Paul Ramaloko.
He said Botes, 50, was arrested on Wednesday at his home in Pretoria, after an investor registered a complaint with the serious economic offence unit of the Hawks.
“The complaint was investigated and it was found that Botes allegedly defrauded over 20 people through his Botes Brokers [company].”
Ramaloko said Botes appeared at the Specialised Commercial Court in Pretoria on Wednesday and was granted R10,000 bail. His case was postponed to February 21.
“We expect to add more charges against him,” Ramaloko said.
He called on people who believed they might have been defrauded through Botes' company to contact Warrant Officer Ben Mokoena at the serious economic offence unit of the Hawks on 082-415-5898.
