Johannesburg - Four police officers stationed at Wentworth police station have appeared in court on corruption charges, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.

The four, Sergeant Irvin Surriah, 41, Sergeant Brian James, 42, Constable Phillemon Msomi, 30, and Constable Sifiso Thobo, 28, appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate's Court on Friday, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

The four were arrested at the police station by the Hawks for allegedly demanding a bribe of R12,000 from a man they found in possession of an unlicensed gun in January.

They were granted bail of R1000 each. The case was transferred to the Durban Magistrate's Court and the four would appear on Thursday. - Sapa
