Johannesburg - Four suspected robbers have been arrested after a high-speed chase through Johannesburg's northern suburbs, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Police were investigating whether the four were linked to a series of robberies, where people were followed home from shopping malls and robbed of cash and jewellery by gunmen wearing balaclavas or ski masks, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

On Tuesday, Sandton police became suspicious of a black Peugeot and they tried to stop and search it.

The car sped off and police gave chase from the Rivonia off-ramp of the N1 and finally cornered the vehicle at the Greenstone Shopping Centre in Greenstone Hill.

Four unlicensed 9mm pistols and ski masks were found when police searched the vehicle.

The four people in the car were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms.

“Three of these suspects were previously arrested on serious and violent crimes and they are out on bail for cases of armed robbery, house robbery, hijacking of vehicle and possession of unlicensed firearms,” Dlamini said.

Two of them were also linked to two house robberies in Honeydew.

“One of the three suspects was sentenced to 45 years' imprisonment after being convicted of a house robbery in Bramley and he is out on bail pending an appeal of the sentence.”

The four would appear in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

“Police intend to oppose bail as the suspects are out on bail on serious crimes and may also be linked to other cases as investigation continues,” Dlamini said.
