Johannesburg - Four men have been arrested in Johannesburg for possession of gold, the Hawks said on Monday.
Colonel McIntosh Polela said the Hawks were on routine patrol when they stopped a Volkswagen Golf with four occupants on Sunday.
They searched the vehicle and discovered gold weighing 1.558kg.
Polela said the men, aged between 28 and 32, were all foreigners and could not explain how they had come to be in possession of the precious metal.
They would appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate's court on Tuesday, on a charge of illegal possession of unlicensed gold.
Their residential status would also be verified with Home Affairs, Polela said. - Sapa
