Four held over contraband cigarettes

Johannesburg - Four men were arrested for the possession of contraband cigarettes in Klopper Park, Germiston, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Monday.

The men, aged between 29 and 44, were arrested on Saturday night at a Bangladeshi-owned store in the area, said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

Two cases of Seville, eight cartons of Mega, five of Sharp, four of Director and one of Savannah were seized.

A person believed to be the shop manager was also arrested during the raid and allegedly attempted to bribe metro police officers by offering them R10 000 in cash.

Another was also found in possession of a fraudulent asylum seeker document.

“Over and above the charges of possession of illicit cigarettes, the manager will face an additional charge of bribery and one of his employees an additional charge of being in possession and using of a fraudulent asylum-seeker document,” said Kgasago.

The men would appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
