Durban - Four men, including a car guard, were arrested at the Umhlanga Coastlands Hotel near Durban for alleged fraud, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

The men, aged between 56 and 30, were arrested on Tuesday, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

They booked into the hotel, allegedly using a fraudulent credit card belonging to a man in the United Kingdom, and were allegedly planning to defraud a bank in Durban.

“Three of the four guests flew in from Johannesburg,” said Zwane. One of these was the car guard. The fourth man was from Durban.

Fake South African identity documents were found inside the men's rooms.

“One fake South African identity document belonged to a Nigerian national who was among the four males and the other belonged to a car guard,” said Zwane.

“It was discovered that the suspects were planning to use the car guard and his fraudulent identity document to defraud a bank for R12 million,” said Zwane.

The men would appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday. - Sapa
