Nelspruit - Four men accused of assaulting a man to the extent that he was now paralysed appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Thursday.
A Sapa correspondent reported that magistrate Andre Geldenhuys postponed the matter to November 8 for trial and ruled the four men remain in custody.
Bongane Ngomane, Velly Metane, Vusi-Muzi Sambo and Sifiso Ngoma, from Masoyi near Hazyview, were arrested in 2008 after Lucas Mohlala was severely assaulted and left for dead.
Mohlala, now 23, was paralysed for life after the attack.
The four men have pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder.
Mohlala's mother Elizabeth, speaking to reporters outside the court on Thursday, said she wanted to see justice done.
“The case has been dragging for years due to my son's health condition,” she said.
She said the attack happened after her son saw men rob a neighbour's house in their village.
“After my son told the owner who was responsible for the theft, some people came to our house looking for him, but he was not home,” she said.
“Unfortunately they met up with him on the street and started beating him up. He was left for dead. We rushed him to hospital for treatment, but we were later told he was paralysed for life.”
