Rustenburg – The stepson of a funeral parlour owner and three other men were arrested in connection with her murder in Taung, North West police said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Pelonomi Makau said Joel Tumo Phatudi, 39, Zwelinzima Mohapi, 23, Olebogeng Mgijima, 25, and Lebogang Serei, 40, were arrested in Rooiwal near Taung on June 14 and June 15 respectively in connection with the murder of Kgomotso Serei.

Serei was gunned down in her funeral parlour on May 25, after Phatudi, Mohapi and Mgijima entered the funeral parlour and demanded money .

An argument ensued between them and Serei. She was shot dead and the three then ran away.

"They appeared in the Taung Magistrates' court on Monday [June 19, 2017] and were remanded in custody. They will appear again on June 26, 2017 for further investigation," said Makau.

She said preliminary investigations revealed that Lebogang Serei, the fourth accused, who is the deceased's stepson, was allegedly behind her murder.

He was also arrested on June 16. The stepson allegedly hired three accomplices to help kill Serei, but when he failed to pay the hitmen, they spilled the beans.
