Johannesburg - Four men were expected to make their second court appearance for fraud on Thursday in the Colenso Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal, police said.

Stabiso Majiya, 20, Sithuli Hlongwane, 33, Mfanafuthi Shangase, 23, and Thandanani Smamane, 29, have been in custody since their arrest on September 24, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.

Recounting events leading to the arrest of the four suspects, Zwane said the police were alerted about a suspicious looking vehicle parked near an ATM in Winterton.

Police located the vehicle. They searched the four occupants and recovered bank cards belonging to other people.

“They were also found in possession of more than R1 000 cash which was suspected to be withdrawn at the Bergville ATM using one of the bank cards found on them,” Zwane said.

The men were also suspected of being involved in other fraud cases, in which victims were robbed of their bank cards and money was withdrawn from their accounts.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Winterton police officers as well as the community.

“We appeal to the community to continue working hand in hand with the police in fighting crime in our province,” said Ngobeni.

“The arrested suspects might be linked to other cases where stolen bank cards were used to withdraw cash from ATMs.”
