Durban - Four suspected robbers died in a shootout with police in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

The men were allegedly fleeing from a robbery scene on the south coast on Thursday when the incident took place, said Colonel Jay Naicker.

“They were intercepted by members of Bellair police who called for back-up from the Umlazi K9 unit. Police gave chase and the suspects opened fire on police at Booth Road,” he said.

“The suspects continued to flee with police chasing them. As the suspects attempted to enter the N3 they crashed into a barrier on Spine Road.”

They alighted and continued firing at police.

“Police returned fire and all four suspects were killed in the shootout,” said Naicker.

A bystander was also shot and wounded in the crossfire. He was taken to a local hospital.

Police recovered five firearms from the scene, including an AK47 rifle. - Sapa
