Odendaalsrus - A motorist arrested after a head-on collision in which a taxi driver died and 15 people were injured has been released by the Odendaalsrus Magistrate's Court, Free State police said on Wednesday.

During an appearance on Tuesday, the matter was provisionally withdrawn because the investigation was incomplete, said Captain Stephen Thakeng.

The 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday, and was fined R500 for driving without a valid driver's licence.

At the time, Thakeng said witnesses had told the police the man was on his cellphone when he lost control of his BMW and it veered into the path of the oncoming taxi.

The 48-year-old taxi driver died at the scene. His 15 passengers, including a seven-month-old baby, were injured and were taken to two hospitals in Welkom.
