Durban - Family and friends of Desiree Murugan, 39, have described her death as barbaric.

Her decapitated body was found by municipal maintenance staff at the Shallcross sports stadium two weeks ago.

Speaking at her funeral, Pastor Jonathan Naidoo of Apostolic Faith Mission said her killing was tragic.

He said a detective who was a member of his church told him the head was intended for muthi. “She was stabbed 40 times and her head was cut off. Those responsible for her death were probably promised a huge sum.”

Addressing more than 400 mourners, Tholsie Naidoo, from the Divine Life Society, urged young people to respect their parents, who worked hard to instil morals in their children.

“All of you know how painful it is for this family. This woman comes from a decent home with good values,” Tholsie said.

Murugan’s sister Jennet said the family had been disturbed by media reports which had portrayed her sister as a sex worker while overlooking the problems she faced.

Mary Moodley, 45, a neighbour who grew up with Murugan, described her as a good-natured person who got into drugs. She said she had tried to talk her out of it, but Murugan could not stay off the drugs.

SAPS spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the suspects arrested in connection with Murugan’s murder were expected to appear in court next week.

Six suspects, aged between 18 and 32, led police to the South Coast where Murugan’s head was found.

Murugan is survived by her 6-year-old son.
