Johannesburg - The owner of the Rosettenville, Johannesburg, crèche where a toddler was bound and gagged has been charged, police said on Thursday.

“The owner of the crèche has been charged with assault and child abuse,” Captain Tshekiso Mofokeng said.

Labeeba Truter was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Thursday.

Mofokeng said investigations into the matter were still ongoing.

The Petite Bumper Daycare came under the spotlight on Tuesday when the Daily Sun reported the story of the toddler tied up and gagged in a bathroom of the crèche, allegedly by the owner, so that she could watch television.

The child was recorded and in the video, she tries to free herself by moving around on the floor until she gets stuck between the toilet and the wall.

Truter told the paper she was aware of the incident but had not reported it to police. She claimed she was not responsible for the abuse and she did not know it was child abuse. - Sapa
