Hammarsdale - A man has been arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Georgedale, Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

The 33-year-old was expected to appear in the Hammarsdale Magistrate's Court on Thursday, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Police believed he was a member of the gang that shot dead five people and wounded three others at a party in the township of Mpumalanga on Saturday night.

Five other men, aged between 22 and 27, were arrested for the crimes on Tuesday, Colonel Jay Naicker said at the time.

The five, aged between 20 and 28, were killed on Saturday night at a house in Sankontshe, between Pinetown and Pietermaritzburg. The victims were wanted for a number of murder cases and armed robberies committed in the area.

“Two of the deceased were out on bail and were due to appear in court next month facing murder charges,” Naicker said.

Three other people at the house where the shooting took place were wounded. They were not part of the group that was wanted for murders in the area. Four firearms were seized during the arrests.
