Johannebsurg - Eight men were caught with unlicensed firearms and ammunition in their possession in Kagiso on the West Rand on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

The men, aged between 23 and 35, were arrested in the morning after police discovered five unlicensed firearms in the two vehicles the men were travelling in, Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

Three pistols were found in a silver Toyota Corolla that five of the men were travelling in.

A car chase ensued when the second vehicle, a gold Toyota Tazz, fled to Old Main Reef Road towards Randfontein, Mogale said.

Three more men were arrested and two more unlicensed firearms were found.

One of the firearms was linked to a crime in the Northern Cape.

The group would appear in the Kagiso Magistrate's Court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, she said.
