Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, the founder of charity organisation Gift of the Givers, was hijacked on Thursday at an intersection in Pietermaritzburg, not far from his home.

Sooliman was too shaken to elaborate to The Star on Thursday night, but confirmed the incident.

According to KwaZulu-Natal Midlands SAPS spokeswoman Lieutenant Joey Jeevan, Sooliman had just arrived from France and was driving home from the airport when three men approached him at an intersection.

One of them had a shotgun.

“They confronted him and told him to get out of his vehicle,” Jeevan said.

The incident happened around 6.15pm.

Sooliman reported that his passport and foreign currency were in the car, and the thugs made a quick getaway.

“He had a good look at the men, given that after 6 it is dark in winter,” Jeevan said.

The robbers drove off in Sooliman’s silver BMW 325i, sports series.

The police were searching for the vehicle, NUR 32128.

Sooliman walked home and phoned the police to report the hijacking.
