Ventersburg – A 15-year-old girl was killed in a motorbike accident, Free State police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane said the accident occurred when a motorbike rider accidentally collided into the young girl on Thursday at about 6:25pm on the R70 near Mamahabane, Ventersburg.

He said: “It is alleged that the young girl was accidentally hit by the 53-year-old driver of the motorbike while trying to cross the R70 road.”

“The young girl was allegedly accompanying her friends who live on a farm on the outskirts of Ventersburg to a hitch-hiking spot and the driver of the motorbike was headed to Harrismith.”

Mokhuoane said police were called but the girl “was certified dead at the scene”.

“The driver of the motorbike sustained minor injuries. The next of kin of the young girl has been informed,” he said.

Mokhuoane said that a case of culpable homicide was opened and local authorities were still conducting investigations.
