Johannesburg - A seven-year-old Limpopo girl has been raped and left for dead.
Police say she lay unconscious and bleeding in the street of Hlanganani village outside Elim where she was found by two boys just before noon on Saturday. She later died in hospital.
Her body had apparently been mutilated, but police would not comment on this.
“We still have to do a post-mortem,” Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
He said police had arrested a 32-year-old man who is a close relative of the girl.
The police had gone to the man’s house to question him, he said, adding that they offered him transport to the police station to take a statement.
“He refused our offer and said he will use his own transport. But on the way, he then sped off for about 25km until we caught up with him,” Mulaudzi said.
“We had to use an army of vehicles to block him because he was driving a truck,” Mulaudzi added.
The suspect will be charged with rape and murder and is expected to appear in court soon.
