Pretoria - An elderly Pretoria woman who tried to close her neighbour's gate to prevent their dogs from attacking municipal refuse removers was badly bitten, Beeld reported on Friday.

Babs Lottering, 71, had her arm and leg savaged by a boerbul and a pitbull-boerbul cross and had to be rescued by neighbours on Thursday.

“I never thought they would attack me, because they know me. I always stand chatting to my sister, who lives across the road, and the dogs see me there all the time,” Lottering said.

After the dogs attacked Lottering, she screamed and tried to fend them off, hitting them several times, but she was unsuccessful.

Neighbours came running when they heard her screams, and they were able to force the dogs back into their owners' yard.

Lottering later underwent surgery in a Pretoria hospital to repair damage to her arm and leg.

The dogs' owners told Beeld they were puzzled by the attack, said their animals were “very soft-natured”, and were distraught when police at the scene of the attack told them that the dogs would have to be put down. - Sapa
