Johannesburg -

An ANC mural in Soweto has been defaced by graffiti artists, who placed a cross on the face of President Jacob Zuma and labelled him an “ass”.

The mural - across the street from Elmon Malele Park in Protea North - is part of a series around Gauteng promoting the ANC.

This wall, painted in November by Paperpush Productions, features the FNB Stadium and Zuma’s smile, with the words: “We’ve built a lasting legacy. Imagine what we can do in the next 100 years.”

Now, the advertisement also includes the word “ASS” in big blue capitals and an arrow pointed at Zuma’s crossed-out face.

However, ANC Joburg spokesman Jolidee Matongo said it was not a political statement. “It’s sheer vandalism.”

Homeowner Simphiwe Ntshingila, who works for Paperpush as a sound engineer and sells his wall space for advertising, seemed to agree.

“I let them (the graffiti artists) use one section of my wall but they’re not happy because it doesn’t face the road,” he said.

“They destroyed the mural because we wouldn’t give (that wall) to them.”

Ntshingila said previous murals advertising Kaizer Chiefs and Choice condoms were also vandalised.
