A child and her grandmother died in an alleged arson attack near Uitenhage, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.
Olivia Seekoei, 11, and her grandmother Amelia Seekoei, 68, died when their house was allegedly set alight on Wednesday night, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said.
The fire followed an argument between their male relative and a 36-year-old man, in which he allegedly came to the family's house and beat the male relative with a piece of iron. The man apparently threatened to return. The relative hid in the bushes and watched as his assailant came back and allegedly started the fire.
The man ran to fetch help, but by the time they got back the house had burnt to the ground. The woman and child were found dead in the ruins. The alleged arsonist was arrested at the scene on Thursday morning.
He would appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates' Court on Monday on two counts of murder. - Sapa
