Durban - A Durban grandfather waiting in his car outside a primary school to pick up his granddaughter was killed in a hijacking on Thursday.

Rodgers Govender was shot once through the chest while outside Kenville Primary School, in Durban.

His son-in-law, Preggi Govender, raced to the scene when he heard the news and found Govender on the ground.

Preggi said Govender had been waiting for the child along with other parents parked in the street.

A witness, who asked not to be named, said two men approached Govender.

“The window was open and they put their hands into the car.”

She said at first she thought they knew the older man. “When they told him to get out I knew they were not playing… They shot him inside the car and pulled him out and got in the car and drove off.”

The hijacked car was a maroon Toyota Tazz.

“You read about such incidents in newspapers but seeing it in real life is a different thing,” she said.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said a case of murder was opened but no arrests had been made.

Preggi, who lived with Govender, said his father-in-law was always willing to help and loved fetching his grandchild from school.

A staff member at the school said everyone was shocked.

She said Govender’s granddaughter was shielded from the horror: “She was sent home in another car, without seeing her grandfather’s body.”

She said the school had asked the police to step up patrols because there had been other incidents where cars were hijacked and parents robbed.

Kenville resident, Shiksha Fakazi, said she had known Govender for more than 25 years.

When she was a child he had often helped out and given her lifts to school, and would offer advice to anyone with a problem.

“He was just a quiet uncle,” she said.
