The family of Pule* – the 17-year-old mentally challenged boy who was allegedly raped by a teenage girl and her adult sister – are devastated.

The boy said he was raped last Sunday at the house of his assailants, who live three streets from his home in White City, Soweto.

Pule’s grandmother, who cannot be named to protect his identity, said she was angry as it was clear that the two suspected rapists had taken advantage of the boy because of his condition.

“They abused him because of his (mental) state,” the grandmother said on Sunday.

The family learnt of the rape incident after Pule told them about it last Sunday. According to the granny, the two women had earlier tried to rape Pule and his friend, who is also 17. They allegedly invited the boys into their home, and once inside, allegedly gave them some wine.

The teenage girl’s elder sister, aged 26, then asked Pule’s friend to show them his genitals. But Pule stopped him and the two boys left.

Later one of the girl’s met Pule at the gate at her house, took him inside and locked him inside.

“She asked him if he had a condom. He said ‘no’,” the granny said. “He said she stripped his clothes off and told him to lie face up. She then got on top of him and told him they were making a baby.”

Once the teenage girl had finished raping the boy, the granny said, she apparently told him that if he reported the incident to the police, she would say it was he who had come to the house, and that the sex was consensual.

The boy told his granny what had happened when he got home. “I was shocked. Still sceptical, the granny went to the boy’s friend, who confirmed his version of events. Pule’s relatives had a meeting with the alleged perpetrators’ families to try to resolve the matter, but when this failed, they opened a sexual assault case., which the police have confirmed.

“It’s clear that it (the rape) has affected him. He’s aggressive. It makes me feel depressed,” the granny said.
