About 70 military hand grenades were stolen on Wednesday near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, Eyewitness News (EWN) reported.

The grenades were on the back of a bakkie at a petrol station on the N1. They were being transported to the Wallmansthal military base in Pretoria.

A police officer said they were searching for thieves who stole two crates containing 35 grenades each. Three crates were stolen. One was discovered in a nearby field.

Apparently the driver and his assistant arrived at the station around 5am and were resting at the time of the robbery.

Police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said an official statement would be released soon. – Sapa
