Kimberley - Notice to appeal both the conviction and sentencing of triple murder accused, Don Steenkamp, who was sentenced to serve 20 years imprisonment, is expected to be handed over to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions on Tuesday.

The 14-day window period for the defence to submit the notice expires on Tuesday, while Heads of Argument can be handed in at a later stage.

Steenkamp, who turned 18 years old on August 15, was found guilty of murdering his family on their farm Naauwhoek, near Griquatown on Good Friday 2012.

Deon, 44, Christel, 43, and Marthella Steenkamp, 14, died of multiple gunshots to their heads and bodies by means of two firearms that were removed from the safe.

Don was also found guilty of raping Marthella as well as defeating the ends of justice.

It is believed that the motivation for the appeal is fairly lengthy.

Arranging a date for the appeal hearing will depend on the availability of a full bench of judges where three Northern Cape High Court judges will preside over the case.

If the appeal is unsuccessful, the matter can be referred to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.
