Durban - The creators of the Facebook page “Copkillers Life plus Twenty”, set up after the death of a Durban policeman, hope to gather support to campaign for amendments to minimum sentencing laws to make the murder of a police official a “real” life sentence in maximum security.

The site is asking for no parole or early release for medical or any other reasons.

The team behind the page, who have requested anonymity because of work-related protocols, said they had lost several brothers and sisters in blue.

The latest death in KwaZulu-Natal was Ashok Ramsakkan, 53, which brought the death toll to 80 police officers killed in the line of duty in the country this year.

“I wish we could campaign for the death penalty, but this is not realistic. ‘Copkillers Life plus Twenty’ is both achievable and a catchy rallying cry for a campaign. This will be a long road and we will face many obstacles,” they said.

Ramsakkan died in hospital earlier this week.

The Durban Flying Squad member was shot in KwaMashu on Sunday last week.
