Kimberley - The 16 year old accused in the triple murder case of the Steenkamp family on their farm Naauwhoek, about 10 kilometres from Griquatown, in the Northern Cape, appeared calm while gruesome images were shown of the deceased, whose bodies were riddled with bullets.
The family of the deceased - Deon 44, Christel, 43 and Marthella, 14 Steenkamp did not object to the forensic evidence being shown on a large screen inside the court room during day two of the trial in the Northern Cape High Court on Tuesday.
Deon Steenkamp’s parents, later left the court, due to the graphic nature of the images while family friends shielded their faces when visuals of the faces of the deceased that were covered in blood, were exhibited.
The accused looked away at times while the court perused through the forensic evidence.
A bundle of 206 photographs taken at the crime scene showed suspected blood stains on the wall at the back entrance of the farm, on the kitchen floor, wooden cupboards as well as the marble counter tops.
What appeared to be blood marks were also visible near the landline telephone was left off the hook. Footage was also taken of jackets with bullet holes, along with a bullet hole in a wall of one of the rooms. Glasses were left abandoned in the back garden and the safe in the main bedroom was left open. A cellphone was placed on top of a bible inside Marthella’s bedroom.
SAPS commanding officer of the Crime Scene Investigating Unit Lieutenant Andre Mark Mc Anda, who attended to the scene on April 6 2012 said that he noticed the body of a male (Deon) lying face down on the floor, near a wooden cupboard.
Bullet cartridges were found on his back, buttocks and on the floor next to his leg and there was a blood smear near his head.
His arms and face was covered with blood after the forensic team turned his body around.
Marthella and her mother Christel were found lying opposite each other on the floor in the sitting room.
The side of Marthella’s body where she was lying was soaked in blood soaked while Christel was also lying face down.
