Johannesburg - A security guard was arrested after five people were shot and injured at Pan Africa shopping centre in Alexandra on Friday, Gauteng police said.

Spokesman Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the security guard told police he spotted a person who he suspected was carrying a firearm at around midday at the mall.

“He opened fire directed at the suspicious person, injuring five females and a male in the process. He was consequently arrested and charged with attempted murder,” Maphakela said.

The person suspected of having a firearm was not found, he said.

The security guard’s firearm was confiscated. He would appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court soon.
