Johannesburg - An Ekurhuleni metro municipality electricity department security guard has been arrested for copper theft, the metro police said on Sunday.
“We got information that a massive copper cable was being loaded into a truck on Saturday by two men and the security guard was assisting them,” said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.
The 49-year-old security guard, whose employer was contracted to guard electricity department property, admitted inviting two accomplices to steal the cable, he said.
The thieves stored the cable, which was 55 metres long and worth about R83 000, at the house for safekeeping, said Kgasago.
The guard, the owner of the house and the third accomplice had been charged with theft and would appear in the Tembisa Magistrates' Court on Monday. The driver of the truck was still sought. - Sapa
