Durban - In a robbery on Thursday, an AK-47-wielding gang pulled off a cash-in-transit heist in Pietermaritzburg - shooting and seriously injuring one of three guards.

The robbers, in a stolen Toyota Fortuner, chased and then rammed an unmarked cash van on Oribi Road in Bisley.

The vehicles were wrecked in the collision.

The robbers attacked the guards, stole their firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash.

They escaped in two awaiting getaway cars: a red VW Golf GTI and a white Ford Focus.

Police believe the vehicles were stolen in Johannesburg earlier this month. The vehicles were recovered shortly after the heist, abandoned near the Bisley Game Reserve.

Some of the firearms stolen from the guards were found in the vehicles.

Police swarmed the scene on Thursday looking for suspects.

One of the guards, who spoke to the Daily News on condition that his name not be published, said he believed the attack was well-orchestrated, and the robbers had inside information.

“We were in an unmarked vehicle. How did the robbers know the vehicle or the route we would take. They were well prepared and knew how many of us (guards) there were going to be. We didn’t know what hit us,” the guard said.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said no arrests had been made.
