Durban - A security guard was shot dead and another wounded when armed robbers stole the bakkie loaded with cigarettes that they were escorting in Durban on Thursday.

Police spokeswoman Nqobile Gwala said that an Isuzu bakkie loaded with cigarettes was driving along Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe when three armed men stopped in front of the bakkie.

They started shooting at the security guards, killing the one and wounding the other. The armed attackers beat up the bakkie driver, before fleeing with the bakkie loaded with cigarettes. The bakkie was later found abandoned in the Waterloo area near verulam.

Gwala said a case of murder and attempted murder had been opened at the Phoenix police station.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said the security guard died before paramedics arrived.

The driver, who was assaulted, and the other security guard were taken to hospital.
