Durban - A security guard was shot dead in a robbery at Boxer Superstore in Mariannhill on Thursday during a cash-in-transit heist.

Boxer Superstores marketing director Andrew Miles said the robbery took place at 9.30am when the Fidelity cash-in-transit vehicle was parked in the parking lot next to the store.

He said an armed gang stormed the van and a shootout ensued, with the men fleeing empty-handed.

“Two of the cash boxes at the store and a firearm were recovered on the pavement. Police arrived and cordoned off the area. The store, main road and parking area was closed for police to investigate.

“None of the staff or the customers were injured as the attack was directed at the Fidelity guards,” said Miles.

Miles said that, to his knowledge, no suspects had been arrested as yet. “Our condolences go out to the slain guard’s family. We are still speaking to witnesses and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesman Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the police were investigating a case of armed robbery, murder and attempted murder.

“It is alleged that two Fidelity guards were accosted by unknown suspects while they were loading money into the ATM. The suspects fired shots at the security guards.

“A 39-year-old guard was fatally wounded and one bystander was injured. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled,” said Mhlongo.

Two abandoned getaway vehicles were later found in the Dassenhoek area.
