Gugs girl’s body found under bedComment on this story
Cape Town - The body of a 10-year-old girl was found hidden under a bed in her grandfather’s home in Gugulethu on Tuesday. Neighbours claimed the girl had been raped and killed by relatives.
A man – not the grandfather – has been taken in for questioning.
Chelsea Goso, 10, a Grade 5 pupil at Xolani Primary school, was found in a big plaid bag still dressed in her maroon school uniform on Tuesday, her chest covered in blood.
She had been missing since Monday.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the body of the child had been found and a man had been taken in for questioning. He could not confirm neighbours’ claims that three people had been held.
Van Wyk said: “A case of murder has been opened for investigation. Post mortem tests will be done to verify the cause of death and whether there was any sexual assault.”
Chelsea lived with her mother in NY114, but because her mother, Noreen Goso, worked until early evening, the girl spent her afternoons after school with her grandfather Peter Goso in NY130.
A relative, Zelda Beukes, said Chelsea was last seen playing alone in her grandfather’s yard after school on Monday.
Beukes said the girlfriend of one of the accused relatives confessed to knowing something about the child’s disappearance.
“I kept on interrogating her until she confessed. She tried saying she wants the truth to come out and she said we would find the body in the bin at her grandfather’s home.”
Beukes and a search team returned to the home in NY130 and found the child’s body.
On Tuesday, entry to the house in NY130 was cordoned off by police.
Chelsea’s mother and grandfather had been rushed to the police station.
Angry residents parked in the middle of the street singing songs of the struggle in light of Women’s Month.
A resident, who declined to be named, said she feared for the lives of the children in their community.
“I’m scared for our children. It’s Women’s Month and these sort of crimes are still happening.”
Beukes said Chelsea was a quiet child who loved spending time with her mother.
She said: “She was her mother’s best friend and a very loving child.
