Pietermaritzburg - A man who stabbed his girlfriend in a fight and cut her legs off was convicted of murder by the High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

Zakhele Nkosi, 35, of Paulpietersburg, told the court he stabbed his lover Sibongile Nzama and cut off her legs as he tried to conceal her body.

He said they had bought two-and-a-half cases of beer worth R280 which they drank at their home from 4pm until 8pm on April 29.

They argued about money and he stabbed her. He fled, but returned three days later.

Nkosi cut off her legs and threw them into a neighbour's pit toilet. He wrapped her body in plastic and hid it under a bed.

He later confessed the crime to his mother and brother. Nkosi's mother made him tell police. Two days later, five days after the murder, he pointed out his lover's body parts to the police.

Sentencing arguments would be heard on Friday.
