Johannesburg - Another suspect was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of police cluster commander Major-General Tirhani Maswanganyi last year.

A police source told The Star that a Hawks officer who was facing kidnapping and assault charges alongside Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir was arrested.

On Wednesday, Brigadier Neville Malila confirmed that a 42-year-old SAPS member had handed himself in and been arrested on charges of conspiracy to murder.

The suspect was allegedly involved in a plot to kill the investigators looking into Maswanganyi’s murder.

He said the suspect would appear in court on Friday, but they would not reveal his identity yet and could not confirm any links to Krejcir.

Maswanganyi was a cluster commander in Joburg when he was murdered near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, in June.

This arrest brings the number of people held in connection with Maswanganyi’s death to seven.

Two people, including a warrant officer, were arrested for allegedly plotting to kill investigators probing the cop’s murder last month.

Both are due back in the Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court on Friday to face conspiracy to murder charges.

Four people, including three SANDF officers, were arrested last year in connection with the murder.

Maswanganyi was found dead in a field near the R101 close to Hammanskraal. His hands and feet were bound.

A police patrol found his abandoned Isuzu bakkie next to the road.

A police uniform and police identification card were found in the bakkie, which prompted a search.
