Johannesburg - The police's Hawks unit has intensified its search for who might be behind a R1.75 million consignment of perlemoen found at OR Tambo International Airport this week, a spokesman said on Sunday.

Hawks spokesman Paul Ramaloko said 8535 perlemoen, also known as abalone, weighing 335kg were packaged as dried fruit, and were destined for Hong Kong.

They were uncovered on Thursday during a search and seizure operation by customs officials and police, but nobody has been arrested yet.
